Emergencies:
At Appalachian Equine we provide 24 hour emergency service for our regular and established clients. If you are not sure you have a real emergency, familiarize yourself with the following examples. If you are still unsure, you can always call for a consultation.


Examples of Urgent Emergencies:
Colic
Lacerations and other trauma
Non-weight bearing lameness
Eye trauma or other abnormalities
Mare in labor unable to deliver the foal
Sudden loss of coordination or balance
Weak foal that is unable to nurse
Choke (saliva coming from the nose)
High fever with inappetence
Dull horse with inappetence
Retained placenta (more than 4 hours)
IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY, STAY CALM and call the office. If it is after hours you will be given the number for the answering service. Be prepared to write down phone numbers. Keep your phone line clear. Be able to give the doctor clear directions to your farm. Try to be observant and give us as much information as you can about the case so that we can be best prepared to handle your emergency. Have a truck and trailer ready to haul to a referral hospital if that should become necessary.
