Services
Services Offered at Appalachian Equine
Ambulatory Service – Appalachian Equine maintains
three fully equipped mobile units on the road to provide routine and urgent care for your animals on the farm or in your home. We provide veterinary care mostly for horses, but we also take care of sheep and goats, llamas and alpacas as well as your dogs and cats in the comfort of their own homes. Members of our office staff are available for scheduling appointments weekdays from 9 to 5 at 626-4121.
Preventive Health Care – Our goal is to prevent
illness and injury if at all possible instead of treating problems after they develop. With vaccination recommendations tailored to your specific needs, we can limit risks associated with exposure to infectious disease. We also discuss parasite control plans that are most appropriate for your animal’s individual environment. Nutrition and stable safety evaluations are also valuable in keeping your animals healthy and happy.
Emergency Service – 24 hour emergency service
is available for our established large animal clients. During regular office hours we will give emergencies priority, sometimes having to re- arrange our regular schedule to take care of sick and injured animals. After hours our answering service will contact the doctor on call to take care of equine emergencies. They can be reached by calling the main office number 24 hours a day or through the after hours answering service at 251-4467 or 252-2222. Small animals are referred to REACH hospital for full service emergency care at 665-4399.
Internal Medicine – Animals with illnesses are evaluated on the farm with close attention to the history of their problem in consideration of other conditions that may be affecting them. Complete, and sometimes repeated, physical examinations reveal information important for planning therapy. Other diagnostics may include laboratory analysis of samples collected or diagnostic imaging if indicated.
General Surgery – We provide general and emergency surgery services in the field when appropriate. Many cases are best served by referral to a surgical facility where sterile conditions and 24-hour peri operative care are provided. We will discuss each case with you on an individual basis to decide what is most appropriate for your needs.
Pre-purchase Examination – Why buy a problem?
Before investing financially and emotionally in a horse it is best to have a purchase exam performed. The potential buyer has the responsibility of knowing their goals and expectations for a particular horse. The veterinarian’s role is to help in the process of deciding if those expectations are realistic for a particular horse. After thorough physical exam, gait evaluation, flexion tests and imaging we work with the clients to make the most informed decisions possible.
Lameness Examination - If a horse shows signs
of lameness or a reduced level of performance, we offer diagnostics to identify the source of a problem. With a thorough history, clinical exam, podiatry evaluation, flexion tests, local anesthesia and diagnostic imaging we can try to localize the source of the problem and plan for therapy to resolve it. Cases that do not reveal their causes after a workup in the field can be referred to hospitals that offer diagnostic modalities only available in a hospital environment such as nuclear scintigraphy, arthroscopy and MRI.
Diagnostic Imaging – At Appalachian Equine we
provide state of the art diagnostics for field examinations. Digital radiography provides instant images for evaluation of traumatic injury, lameness exams and podiatry work with farriers on site. We also have ultrasound technology for evaluation of soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments for lameness as well as for evaluation of the reproductive tract for monitoring breeding and pregnancy. Endoscopy offers a look into the upper respiratory tract as well as the upper part if the GI tract to help with diagnostics in these areas.
Reproduction - Encompassing early evaluation
of a horse for breeding through care of the growing foal, we provide reproductive support and services for whatever your breeding goals may be. We offer breeding soundness examinations to make sure that we start with a healthy patient with excellent breeding potential. We can artificially inseminate with cooled, shipped semen and follow up with diagnosis and monitoring of pregnancy. Care and support of the pregnant mare will give the best chance for the birth of a healthy foal. If a foal is born in need of a bit of extra help we evaluate them for adequate immunity and viability and provide support in the field as indicated. Severely compromised foals are referred to hospitals with neonatal intensive care units where the best possible care is provided.
Dentistry – From routine examinations and floating to more in depth
dentistry procedures, we offer excellent care to maintain your horse’s oral health. Through the use of power tools, digital radiography and attending continuing education seminars in equine dentistry we provide the best in modern dentistry techniques.
Equine Podiatry – Evaluation of hooves and
underlying structures is vital to the general health and performance of our horses. By analyzing how a hoof grows relative to a horse’s unique way of moving and weight bearing we work with many of our excellent farriers to keep horses sound for many disciplines. Pleasure, dressage, hunters and jumpers, western performance and endurance horses can all benefit from periodic evaluations from both their farrier and their veterinarian. Working together, we can maintain a sound foundation for whatever you enjoy doing with your horses.
Performance Evaluations - Is there something not
quite right in how your horse is performing lately? There can be multiple, subtle causes for poor performance. We start with a general exam followed by evaluations of gait, back pain and saddle fit and musculature. If indicated, laboratory and nutritional analysis can help pinpoint underlying problems. After identifying issues we work with you to help your horse reach the best level of performance possible.
Behavior - After spending many years with horses,
studying animal behavior and natural horsemanship we can offer advice and counseling for many behavior problems that you may encounter with your horse. A healthy, balanced relationship leads to a safer and stronger bond between you and your equine companion. Behavior issues with dogs and cats can also be managed to keep your life with your pets balanced and healthy as well.
Saddle Fitting - We evaluate how well your saddle fits you and your horse both statically and dynamically. Poor saddle fit is all to common and can lead to behavior problems, poor performance and chronic back pain. We can help you by attempting to correct problems that you already have and consulting on purchasing a different saddle that fits well if that is the best option.
Massage Therapy - After evaluating conformation,
movement and any areas of pain we can provide massage therapy for your horse and even train you in techniques that you can use to help maintain a supple and pain free horse. We often find subtle underlying problems in horses that go unnoticed until we do a complete assessment. After all, we can’t solve issues until we identify them.
